Legatus Legionis - Legion Legate for Genesis 8 Males is the crown jewel of NextLevel’s Roman Series product line.
With a word, he could send thousands of men into battle - to victory or disaster. Marcus Antonius, Scipio Africanus, Gaius Marius, Julius Caesar, Marcus Agrippa, Drusus, Germanicus, and more. All were Legion Legates (in name or in principle) during their time.
Legion Legates were often members of the Roman senatorial elite, and they were extremely powerful in Roman antiquity. The legion legates held full power over their respective legions. In battle formation, they were easily distinguishable by their elaborate armor and crested helmets. The material of this armor varied, as it would never be put to actual use (in theory) in hand-to-hand combat situations. Sometimes it was polished steel. Other times it was tanned leather. The red waistband (or sash) around the midriff was called the cincticulus, and it epitomized the legion legate's authority over other senior military officers of the legion.
Given that the rank of legatus was highly respected among Rome's elite, the legion legates were entitled to have five lictors attend to them in public affairs. In addition to the lictors, the legate was permitted to have five fasces. Fasces were bundled rods with a small axe - a relic that symbolized power and authority in ancient Rome. These fasces were carried by the lictors, who in turn attended the legate in any public affairs off the battlefield. When first adopted by the Romans, the fasces were used to carry out capital punishment. In the late republic and into the empire thereafter, the fasces was largely just a status symbol.
